I like to see each new day, month or year as an opportunity to learn something new and to grow. Like so many of us my days are built around a routine or a list of to-dos. Sometimes I find it hard to remember when I last did something for the first time.
In this same way it is difficult for God to do something new in us if we don’t step out of the boat in faith and do something a little differently. For instance take a prayer walk instead of praying at home. Not only will you be fitter but you can pray about so much more around you when you take a walk.
This year, with the Olympics in London, how will you be making the most of the British summer ? Don’t just stay at home. There is so much to see, learn and experience. You can top up your oyster and go into town, visit an iconic place, walk around and see central London attractions and experience the vibrancy of life and people.
Something New . . .
A couple of months ago I went on a shoestring a budget trip with the student travel group at my university. We drove through the length of France and spend five days in Barcelona. The group I travelled with were a diverse group of students, Iranian, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, English, Jewish, Kurdish – all different origins and faiths but one thing we had in common was a desire to do something different.
It reminded me of the scripture in John 10;10 that says ” … I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly”.
It got me thinking that there is so much to experience in life and that I really do need to get out there and do this more often.
Even now when I look back at by jpegged memories a smile comes to my face, because for me doing such a thing was so spontaneous and liberating. I now realise that doing something for the first time doesn’t necessarily have to be huge, you just have to start to do it.
Get out There . . .
Whenever I feel like life is not fulfilling, then I realise that I am not living the life that God has called me to live. Getting out of my comfort zone and opening myself up to new possibilities and new experiences by faith challenges me to keep growing in exciting ways that change my life for the better.
I realise now that if I want to do something new this requires forward planning for a weekend, a bank holiday or with a few days off work.
So, when was the last time you did something for the first time?
If it’s been awhile, perhaps it’s time to start integrating more new experiences into your life. You’ll quickly notice how incorporating lots of exciting and engaging moments into your everyday life – no matter how small they may seem – will bring more joy, contentment, and fullness into your life.
